Murphy’s Bye-Laws

Law #4: Any Fool Can Make A Rule and Any Fool Will Mind It. –H.D. Thoreau

Solstice Solace

The sun has strolled across the horizon for six months. Long enough.

Growing weary from the travel, its arc grew shallow

as if the gravity of the horizon increased its pull, leaving us cold and without hope.

Huddled indoors from the chilled darkness, we sun worshippers

mope in our melancholy and shiver with sadness.

.

When the sun finally turns an about-face and paces back from its forth,

like a beaten hero rising again, just when all hope was lost,

our fiery idol again strives for higher peaks over the horizon.

We weepy accountants of time mark the day and prepare a celebration

of light to cheer our escape from the swallowing darkness.
