Murphy’s Bye-Laws

Law #4: Any Fool Can Make A Rule and Any Fool Will Mind It. –H.D. Thoreau

Serene Goodnight

Silhouettes stand stark against a burning horizon

The details hidden in sharp contrast.

The skeletons of trees and a leaning old barn

appear tired but peaceful in the distance.

From up here the deepening orange spans nearly 180 degrees.

The only distinct line of sky is the horizon – smooth over a large furrow field.

Behind the contrast of the pseudo shadows of trees

The sky is a study of subtlety.

Who knew red could transform itself

through orange and blue and disappear into darkening gray?

Like Mancini the Great exiting in a puff of smoke,

So the day yields the stage to the sparkling, dancing stars.

.

The peace of a beautifully tranquil transformation is enlivened

by the cold snap of air and crunch of leaves

as I climb out of my wheeled cage.

A very faint light still lingers with the wispy smoke of burning leaves.

The sights, smells and colors of autumn wash away doubts of time transfixed.

And I find a guttural peace overtakes me while I retrieve my mail

And I await the next act rising with Orion.
